NEWBIES: The 411 for the new comers to Great Neck Terrace

Welcome new and prospective neighbors. Here are a few tips we hope will get off on the right foot at and around Great Neck Terrace.

GENERAL SUGGESTIONS

WINDOWS: According to your Proprietary Lease, you are supposed to keep them clean. If you live on the first floor, consider tinting them with limo tint to keep those pesky busy-bodies out of your living room.

CARPETING: You are required to have 80% of your floor covered in carpeting. Please get the carpeting and don’t annoy your neighbors with that cheap economy stuff or try to get away with some corny runners or throw rugs. They simply do not do the job. After enough complaints from your new neighbors below you, that now hate you, you will eventually have to buy the carpeting anyway. So just do it in the first place and avoid all the headaches.

MAINTENANCE: Tipping the Maintenance staff is not required, but like tipping anywhere, doing so will ensure you get preferential treatment. These guys are all friendly, professional, and typically eager to help out with any issues you may have. Many of them are available for side work, such as ceiling fan installations, appliance removal, etc. but the typical maintenance chores you shouldn’t have to pay for like screen repairs and leaks should go through the Management Office. If you are unsure, you can call the office at (516) 487-5512.

HALLWAYS: Leaving stuff in the halls is a no-no. It’s technically a fire hazard, and probably shouldn't be pushed much beyond a welcome mat (which you technically aren’t supposed to have either, but it’s pretty much tolerated). Also, be repectful and don't smoke, make excessive noise in the hallway, or open windows when at inappropriate time..

DOGS & CATS: Great Neck Terrace house rules state to keep your dog or cat on a leash at all times when outside of your apartment. And please, keep them out of the inner court yards and avoid destroying the grass. Here are the pet rules if you aren’t familiar. There are also limits on breeds and how many cats and dogs you may have.

GRASS: Try not to mess up the grass. The dogs, golf carts, sewer line work, and winter have ruined it enough. Let it grow back in peace. And if your dog has the type of urine that turns the grass yellow, please have it relieve itself on the pavement or dogrun.

STOP SIGNS: We're not going to tell you that you are supposed to stop at these red, octagon shaped signs because everybody knows that. But for some reason, people around here seem to think it doesn’t apply. So make sure you watch yourself and your kids for people blowing through stop signs, including the cops!

STREET PARKING RULES AND TICKETS: While parking is pretty available at most time, it's probably best to get a parking space or garage, because these meter maids are relentless and sometimes even get creative with their ticket writing. Then if you want to fight it, you head over to the dumpy courthouse in Hempstead where the judge will find you guilty no matter what. There is no parking on one side of the street on Wednesdays from 8am to 12pm, and Thursdays on the other side, same hours. Ticketing starts at 8:00am sharp, so please be aware where you park the night before if leaving after 8am the next morning.

LAUNDRY: We have machines in the basement of most of the three story buildings. $2.00 for the washer, $1.75 for the dryer. You have to use a laundry card (no bills or change). You can fill it up at the machine at the office or a few building, or use their website here to refill your laundry card on your credit/debit card. You should get a laundry card when you move in. If you lose it it’s something like $5 to replace, so try not to lose it. Alternatively, you can always take your laundry out to a place to get it done. There is one down Northern Blvd in Little Neck, just past Little Neck Parkway.

LOCAL SUPERMARKETS & STORES

H-Mart is right up the street on Great Neck Road just before Northern Blvd. It’s more of a Korean grocery store chain, and have a decent selection of fish and produce as well. The pre-packaged sushi there is surprisingly good too. A few tips, the produce will spoil on you very quickly, so if you aren’t going to eat italmost the same day, buy it elsewhere. They have other stuff there, but you are probably better off getting it cheaper elsewhere.

Hours:

8am - 10pm Daily

Best Market (formerly Waldbaums) is located by the Great Neck Train station on Great Neck Road. There is also a Rite Aid, nail salaon, bank, and restaurants in that shopping center as well.

Stop & Shop is just past the Little Neck Post office on the left on Northern Blvd in Little Neck. It’s not as big or nice as the Best Market, but definitely cheaper..

DRY CLEANERS and LIQUOR STORE: are all right around the corner on Great Neck Road just before H-Mart, all within walking distance.

Dry Cleaners’  Hours:
Daily:  7:30am - 6:30pm
Sun: Closed

High Spirit Liquor Store Hours: More Info
Mon: 9:30am - 8:00pm
Tues: 9:30am - 8:00pm
Wed: 9:30am - 8:00pm
Thurs: 9:30am - 8:00pm
Fri: - 9:30am - 9:00pm
Sat: 9:30am - 9:00pm
Sun: 1:00am - 5:00pm

H-Mart Plaza – Right around the corner on Great Neck Road. Offers a bank, a hair salon, and an Asain themed food court. The bank may have the closests ATM to us. Avoid that home goods store in the basement unless you want to pay double for Dollar Store-quality goods at champagne prices.

BAGELS: You can go around the corner in the H-Mart parking lot. Pricey, ususally crowded, and generally rude service. The place just up the street on the right, just past Starbucks on Northern Blvd is about the same with no lines and nicer service.

COFFEE: Starbucks just after H-Mart where Great Neck Road hits Northern Blvd. Also a Dunkin Donuts East on Northern Blvd.

GAS: Plenty around. Hess may be the cheapest, but sometimes it’s not.

HAIR, NAILS and DOG GROOMING: Just throw a rock in any direction and it won’t land too far from any of these places. Our friends at that nail place on Northern Blvd in Little Neck, just past Little Neck Pkwy by that Sushi Place is recommended.

HARDWARE STORE: There is a decent ACE Hardwareon Middleneck Road up in Great Neck with a decent inventory. That place on Great Neck Road just seems to want to sell you coffee. So consider it a coffee shop that sells over-priced nails.

MALLS: Nope, we have none.

RESTAURANTS

PIZZA: Toskana at 348 Great Neck Road is good. Napoli Pizza, to the left on Northern Blvd. is one of the best, and you can also hit up our friends at Bocconcini on Northern Blvd in Little Neck. People seem to like that place Gino’s in Great Neck, but it’s a lot farther, expensive, and comes with a side order of attitude with every order.

MEXICAN: Senor Nacho in Great Neck is a great sit down Mexican restaurant.

STEAK HOUSES: It almost ridiculous how many fine steak houses we have in the neighborhood. Just head East on Northern Blvd. and within a few blocks you will come upon the likes of Peter Luger, Morton's, and Bryant & Cooper.

McDonalds: up the road on Northern Blvd. a block past Little Neck Parkway. The drive thru is opened late.

DINNERS: There is Seven Seas on Northern Blvd in Great Neck. Its OK, but the Landmark Diner in Roslyn is much better (and more expensive). It is way down a few miles, just past the Americana shopping center on Northern Blvd. in Rosyln.

Il Bacco and La Grotta offer some fine Italian dining. Both on Northern Blvd., left hand side, a few blocks heading towards Little Neck. Il Bacco has a nice roof top bar when the weather gets nice. La Grotta. You can also check out the other restaurants on Northern Blvd and in the town of Great Neck.

Bell Blvd. in Bayside has everything. Bars, restaurants, sports bars and more bars as far as the eye can see, but the parking can be challenging. The train is always an option.

TRANSPORTATION

Train/ Long Island Rail Road (LIRR): If you are taking the train to NYC, use the Little Neck Train Station. It is a zone closer and will cost you less. If you are travelling on the weekend, be sure to purchase a City Ticket option which will save you even more money. Just know it’s only good until midnight of that day.
No need to drive to the U.S. Open (tennis), City Field, or MSG, our train goes right to all of them.
Now. Make sure you have a ticket ready when you board the train or they will charge you a large penalty for buying it on the train. Also, don’t get stuck waiting for the barrier on the West side of the platform. Use the foot bridge and buy the ticket from the machine inside the shelter on the other side. That way you won’t miss the train when the barrier goes down and both trains come at once. Also, you can get a ticket from the police for running under the barrier, or worse, get run over by a train.

Also, there is a little over-priced mom and pop shop over there on the NY side that serves breakfast, drinks, newspapers and lotto.
Train prices are here. http://lirr42.mta.info/fares.php

BUS STOP: Just head over to Northern Blvd. and you can hop on a bus either way if you want to.

TAXI: Ollies is the local taxi around here. They will take you locally or to the airport.

(718) 229-5454 or visit their website.

OTHER AMUSEMENT

MOVIE THEATER: There is one in the village of Great Neck located at 115 Middle Neck Rd, Great Neck, NY 11021. Phone: (516) 466-2020

PARKS: We have a pool, basketball court and a playground at GNT, but there are much bigger and better places if you want to hop in the car. Christopher Morley Park ( L.I.E. exit 36) is really nice. They have a 9 hole par three golf course, outdoor ice skating in the Winter, swimming pools, a few trails and a dog run. Requires Nassau County Parks card and a few bucks for most things. Another decent park up the road on Great Neck Road after the right turn.

Indoor ice skating at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck.

Also, Stepping Stone Park in King’s Point. Its right on the water and during the Summer they have free concerts and a free shuttle from GNT if you have your Great Neck Park’s card. Yes, it would be nice if all these parks used the same card, but at least they have chairs when you get there. More info and where to get your park card here: http://www.greatneckparks.org/.

DRIVING RANGE: Ally Pond Golf Center 232-01 Northern Blvd in Douglaston on the right hand side, just past Douglaston Parkway. Lessons, mini golf and driving range.

Well, that about sums it up for now. Any suggestions, additions or questions, please email us at: info@greatneckterrace.com.
